Take top-notch sound quality into the field
TASCAM handheld recorders have provided generations of engineers and sound designers with the sound quality professional applications demand, and the DR-100mkIII more than lives up to this reputation. On the purely analog side, the DR-100mkIII delivers clear, low-noise amplification to your microphones courtesy of a set of digitally controlled HDDA mic pres. Speaking of digital, you get up to 24-bit/192kHz resolution with an ultrastable, 1ppm-accurate temperature-compensated sample clock. And thanks to its dual-mono AKM Velvet Sound AK4558 converters, the DR-100mkIII can provide an astonishing 109dB signal-to-noise ratio when running in Dual ADC mode.
Excellent onboard mics let you travel light
Whether you're gathering samples, recording the show, or just laying down ideas for your next song, the microphones built into the DR-100mkIII are about as convenient as they come. There are actually a total of four microphones in two stereo sets onboard the DR-100mkIII, a shockmounted AB directional pair and a dual omnidirectional pair. Together, they provide you with a wide range of recording versatility. And thanks to the standard camera-stand threading integrated into the DR-100mkIII's robust black metal chassis, it's easy to mount your recorder wherever you need it.
All the stereo I/O you need onboard
For a 2-channel portable recorder, the TASCAM DR-100mkIII provides an impressive array of I/O options. If you'd rather use external microphones or take a feed off of a mixing console or other line-level device, then you'll appreciate the pair of high-quality XLR combo jacks onboard. Switchable phantom power even lets you use condenser mics that don't have their own battery power supplies. The stereo 1/8" input provides plug-in power for mini electret condensers too, and when you use the included adapter, you can also plug in a stereo S/PDIF digital source. On the output side, a powerful headphone amp with 40mW per channel can keep up with loud live venues, and an onboard speaker provides handy headphone-free playback.
Safeguards ensure you won't miss a thing
The experienced field-recording pros know you often only get one chance to capture an important event. That's why we're huge fans of the DR-100mkIII's safeguards. Dual recording mode discreetly captures a second track at a lower volume in case you clip your input levels, while a built-in Li-ion battery lets you record shorter sessions or swap out your main AA batteries mid recording. A second dual recording mode captures both WAV and MP3 files at once to your SDXC card media (up to 128GB supported), and XRI mod writes all of your settings into the meta data attached to your files for future recall.
Streamlined design keeps recording simple
Navigating through settings and menus on a handheld device can add an extra level of stress to a project that no one needs, which is why the DR-100mkIII's simple user interface is so important. You can easily access all essential recording functions via dedicated control buttons and switches (complete with a lockout button to avoid accidents), and a dedicated input level knob lets you quickly adjust the recording volume on the fly. When you do need to access advanced settings such as the built-in limiter, 4-way highpass filter, or variable-speed playback, the 128 x 128 backlit LCD makes navigation painless, and it's also great for monitoring. Lastly, the DR-100mkIII supports TASCAM's RC-10 and RC-3F wired remotes, which are ideal when you need to position your recorder somewhere you can't easily access.
